Many used car dealers often install long-term GPS tracking systems, and the purpose is self-evident. So signal jammers and signal detectors have become hot pieces of equipment.

What is a GPS Jammer?

GPS signal jammers are small, high-power radio frequency (RF signal) transmitters that interfere with lawful communications devices—cell phones, GPS, Wi-Fi networks, and also toll readers.

It emits radio frequency signals in the same frequency as the GPS signal, causing interference and preventing GPS devices from receiving accurate signals. This interference can cause GPS devices to lose their connection to GPS satellites, making it impossible to track their location or receive accurate location information. GPS jammers are illegal in many countries, including the United States, as they can disrupt the operation of emergency services and other important systems that rely on GPS signals. The use of GPS jammers can also be dangerous and can cause accidents, particularly in industries such as aviation and marine navigation.

How do GPS jamming devices work?

GPS receivers rely on low-power microwave signals broadcast from GPS satellites. GPS Signal jammers operate by overwhelming these satellite signals with the higher power, but shorter range, radio signals, to create “noise” that tricks GPS tracking systems into thinking GPS signals are not available. This is also referred to as “spoofing”. causing interference that prevents GPS receivers from accurately calculating their location.

GPS jammers are designed to be small, portable, and easy to operate. They can be purchased online and used by anyone who wants to disrupt the operation of GPS-based equipment or systems.

They can endanger public safety, disrupt the operations of emergency services, and interfere with the navigation systems of aircraft, ships, and other vehicles.

What do GPS jammers look like?

Since devices that can block GPS come from some manufacturers, they vary greatly in shape, size, and dimensions, making them hard to spot within a driver’s vehicle. Most commonly, GPS blockers work over a short-range, and are small enough to plug into a power supply like a cigarette lighter or iPhone and block the signal to a GPS tracker installed within the vehicle cockpit.

Some GPS jammers look like small black boxes or cylindrical devices with antennas, while others are designed to look like everyday objects such as a phone charger or a USB drive.

Handheld GPS jammers are typically small and easy to carry around. They often have a small internal battery and are used to disrupt the GPS signals of nearby devices. Larger GPS jammers are often used in vehicles, boats, or buildings and are designed to cover larger areas or distances.

Open a full GPS Jammer.

Open it and see what’s inside. Measuring 95x45x18mm, with an integrated 5V 1500mAh battery, with an effective range of 1 to 15M Here’s Jammer’s video anatomy!

Cigarette lighter GPS jammer construction

Making a homemade DIY GPS jammer for your car tracker is not an easy task, as it requires a deep understanding of the underlying principles. However, if you are determined to build one, you can dismantle a simple GPS jammer to use as a reference.

Receiving GPS Signals: Distance and Weakness

Despite the fact that GPS satellites are not as high up as communication satellites in geosynchronous orbit, with an average altitude of 20,200 km (12,550 miles), they are still quite distant. The antennas on GPS-equipped devices are relatively small, making it challenging to receive the GPS signal, which is typically quite weak. In fact, the signal is usually below the noise floor, making it difficult to extract any useful information. However, with advanced mathematical algorithms and some technical know-how, devices like your phone can manage to decipher these faint signals and translate them into meaningful location data.

The weakness of GPS signals is what allows low-cost jammers to disrupt them with ease. These jammers don’t attempt to mimic GPS satellites but rather transmit enough loud noise to drown out the real signal. As a result, the legitimate satellite signal becomes undetectable. When a jammer is activated, the impact on the already weak signal is evident as the patterns broadcast by the device completely overpower it.

There’s no competition between the legitimate GPS signal and the low-cost jammer. While the legitimate signal is transmitted from tens of thousands of kilometers away, the jammer is able to disrupt it from very close range. Although I didn’t measure the jammer’s range, I can confirm that it’s capable of disrupting the GPS signal at a distance of several meters at least. However, I didn’t want to keep the jammer powered up for longer than necessary.

Its Internal Structure

After a few minutes of operating the prohibited device, we have confirmed that it does actually work as advertised. Now, the only thing left to do is to examine its internal components and understand how it functions. Considering the low price point, I wasn’t expecting much, but it’s still remarkable to see how something so inexpensive can cause such significant disruptions. However, it’s important to note that the use of such devices is illegal.

On one side of the PCB, we can identify only two crucial components, namely a 78M05 regulator that reduces the vehicle’s 12-volt power supply to 5 volts, and the infamous NE555 timer that’s well-known to hackers. It’s unfortunate that it takes a teardown of an illegal jammer to finally spot one of the most iconic Integrated Circuits in the history of electronics, but that’s the reality.

However, a NE555 timer won’t suffice unless you’re attempting to disrupt an AM radio. Flipping the board over reveals the true culprit behind all the chaos.

Radio Frequency Sorcery in a Container

Undoubtedly, the labeled component 13BA A041 is the main attraction. So, what exactly is it? Although I couldn’t locate a datasheet for this particular model, it has been identified as a microwave voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The metallic top cover we can see is, in fact, a shielding material, and with some effort, we can examine the astonishing array of components that have been crammed into the tiny 9mm x 7mm space.

The fundamental operational principle of this device is that the VCO’s control pin (identified as VC on the silkscreen) links to the output of the 555 timer on the opposite side of the board. The 555 timer’s signal modulates the VCO’s output, which results in the noise we observe centered on the 1,575 MHz GPS frequency.

By connecting the oscilloscope to the VC pin, we can visualize the 133 KHz sawtooth signal produced by the 555 timer. Adjusting this signal could shift the frequency range that the jammer operates on, although without a VCO datasheet, the extent to which this is possible is unclear. Since these components were probably the most affordable, it’s reasonable to assume that the limit may not be much.

Additionally, it’s essential to investigate the small four-pin device at the top of the board that’s designated as Q6. Placed directly in the high-frequency signal’s path as it passes from the VCO to the center pin of the antenna connector, it makes sense for this to be an amplifier. However, it could also serve as a diode to safeguard the electronics from anything that may be picked up from the antenna.

What is the principle of GPS jammer?

The principle of a GPS jammer is to disrupt or overpower the GPS signals being transmitted from the GPS satellites to the GPS receiver. A GPS jammer works by transmitting a powerful radio signal on the same frequency band used by GPS signals, thereby overpowering the GPS signals and rendering them unusable.

GPS signals are transmitted at very low power levels, typically in the range of -125 dBm to -157 dBm. A GPS jammer, however, can transmit at power levels of up to several watts, which is enough to overpower the GPS signals and disrupt the receiver’s ability to accurately determine its position.

GPS jammers can operate on different frequency bands, but most operate on the L1 band, which is used by most civilian GPS receivers. Military GPS receivers often use the L2 and L5 bands, which are less susceptible to jamming.

GPS jamming is illegal in many countries, including the United States, and can result in significant penalties and fines. GPS jammers can also interfere with critical services such as aviation, maritime navigation, and emergency services, raising serious safety concerns.

Is there a way to jam a GPS tracker?

As an AI language model, I do not encourage or promote illegal activities, including jamming GPS trackers. Jamming GPS trackers is illegal in many countries and can cause serious safety concerns as it can disrupt critical services such as aviation, maritime navigation, and emergency services.

However, there are ways to prevent GPS trackers from functioning without using illegal jamming techniques. For example, GPS signal blockers or signal jammers that do not emit a radio signal can be used. These are devices that are designed to create a “shadow” on the area where the GPS signal is received, causing the signal to be lost temporarily. They can be used in areas where GPS signals are normally weak, such as in underground parking garages, but not for illegal purposes.

Alternatively, if the GPS tracker is a portable device, one can simply remove the battery or take steps to shield the device from GPS signals. Additionally, GPS blockers can be installed in vehicles to prevent tracking by GPS devices.

Are GPS jammers illegal?

Any use of GPS signal jammers should be regulated. In the United States, the signal jammer is a device that can be used by government agencies, and ordinary people cannot use it, so please understand the legal risks before using it.

What are the frequencies of all GPS signals?

GPS signal frequency band:

GPS L1: 1570-1580MHz

GPS L2: 1227.60 MHz

GPS L3: 1381.05 MHz

GPS L4: 1379.913 MHz

GPS L5: 1176.45 MHz

Usually the civil frequency band only needs to block GPS L1 L2. Most devices only use GPS L1.

If you spend enough time browsing the internet for interesting electronic devices to take apart, you’re bound to come across some questionable gadgets. That’s how I recently heard about these tiny GPS jammers that plug directly into an automotive 12 V outlet. For around $40 USD, they can be shipped to your door.

But what legitimate uses might such a device have? From what I’m aware, none. The only reason someone would want to jam GPS signals in and around a vehicle is if they’re trying to do something they shouldn’t. For example, someone might be looking to disable the integrated GPS on the car they just stole long enough for them to take it to the chop shop.

Despite the questionable nature of the device, we can still investigate and experiment with it. Let’s take a look and see what it can do!

How GPS Jammers Overpower Weak Signals from the GPS satellites

Given the fact that GPS satellites are located at an average altitude of 20,200 km (12,550 miles), and the size of antenna on most GPS-equipped devices, the received signal is very weak. Even though it is weaker than the noise floor, modern algorithms and some technological magic are able to interpret this whisper from the stars into usable data.

These jammers work because of the fragility of GPS signals – they are easily overpowered by a low-cost jammer. The jammer, however, isn’t trying to mimic a GPS satellite but instead, it simply broadcasts a loud and confusing signal which makes it virtually impossible to hear the real one.

When powered up, this makes it clear how the signal is completely destroyed by the patterns emitted by the device.

Compared to the legitimate signal which is transmitted from thousands of kilometers away, this device emits a stronger signal at arm’s reach. Without testing the range of this device, I can assume that it is capable of doing the deed from several meters away.

How GPS Jammers Overpower Weak Signals from the GPS satellites

After spending some time examining the device, it is clear that it is capable of accomplishing its advertised purpose. It is remarkable to see just how complex this relatively small device is. It is not easy for an individual to build something like this, yet this device is easily available and affordable. Therefore, it is interesting to take a closer look at how it works. By opening it up, we are able to see the intricate inner workings of the device.

We can see two major components on one side of the PCB, one is 78M05 regulator, which is to convert the vehicle’s 12 volts to 5 volts, the other one is the well-known NE555 timer. It is a pity that we have to take apart an jammer to gain this recognition of the most classic IC in the history of electronics.

Though it seems such a shame, it is a common phenomenon that jammer use them. First of all, 78M05 regulator is a voltage regulator which is commonly used to provide a constant voltage to the electronic circuits. The output voltage of this regulator can be adjusted by two external resistors. As for the NE555 Timer, it is a highly stable device which is used to generate accurate time delays or oscillations. It is a perfect device to generate the frequency required by the jammer.

In addition, NE555 timer can also be used in a wide range of other applications. For example, it can be used as a clock generator, pulse generator, timer, or oscillator. It provides excellent stability and accuracy in various applications. Moreover, its operation is very simple and doesn’t require many external components.

By using the 78M05 regulator and the NE555 timer, the jammer can operate normally and generate the required frequency. The sophisticated design and strong performance of these two components make them well suited for this purpose. It is really unfortunate that it takes a teardown of an illegal jammer for us to gain this recognition.

Still, unless you’re looking to jam an AM radio, a 555 isn’t going to cut it. Flipping the board over, we get our first glance at the real trouble maker.

Component 13BA A041 is certainly the star of the show. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a datasheet for this particular model. We can, however, assume it is a microwave voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO).

The visible top plate is, in fact, a metallic shield. If given the right treatments, we can get a look at the interior where an amazing number of components are packed into just a 9 mm x 7 mm area.

It is a impressive feat of engineering, to say the least. The inner workings are a sight to behold. Each of the components serves a specific purpose and is carefully placed so as to achieve maximum efficiency.

The smaller components can be used to generate signals of varying frequencies while the larger components are responsible for controlling and amplifying the signal. It’s amazing to think that all this can be done despite the limited space available.

Overall, the microwave voltage-controlled oscillator is an incredible feat of engineering and a testament to the ingenuity of those who designed it. To be able to fit all of these components into such a tiny area is a testament to the potential of technology.

The function of the circuit board is to modulate the output of a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO). The output of the VCO is connected to the control pin (labeled VC on the silkscreen), and the signal coming from the 555 timer on the other side of the board modulates the VCO’s output. This modulation causes an interference noise centered on 1,575 MHz, which is the frequency of the Global Position System (GPS).

By connecting the VCO’s control pin to the output of the 555 timer, the circuit board is able to control the frequency of the VCO. As the 555 timer’s output changes, the VCO’s output also changes, resulting in the interference noise centered on the GPS frequency. This noise is the result of the circuit board’s ability to modulate the output of the VCO.

By connecting the scope to the VC pin, we can observe a 133 KHz sawtooth signal being generated by the 555 timer. If we were to modify this signal, we would be able to change the frequency range of the jammer. However, since we do not have a datasheet for the VCO, it is hard to tell how far we can push the signal in either direction. Considering that the components used were likely the cheapest available, it is likely that we will not be able to push the signal very far.

We should take a close look at the small four pin device labeled Q6 located at the top of the board. This device is located directly in the path of the high frequency signal when it goes from the VCO to the center pin of the antenna connector. It could be an amplifier, or it might be used to protect the electronics from any signals picked up from the antenna.

To further investigate this, we can take a look at the characteristics of the device. We can examine its pins to see if it has any amplifying components. We can also look at the circuit board and measure the current passing through the device to see if it is a protective diode. These measurements will help us determine the purpose of this device.

We can also analyze the frequency response of the device. We can measure how the device responds to higher frequencies and lower frequencies. If the device is an amplifier, it should respond differently to different frequencies. This will help us determine if the device is an amplifier or a diode.

Finally, we can compare the device to similar devices used in other circuits. We can look at how these devices are used in other high frequency circuits and see if they are similar to the one found in our circuit. This will help us get a better understanding of the device’s purpose and how it is used in this specific circuit.

By taking a closer look at the device and analyzing its characteristics, we should be able to determine if it is an amplifier or a diode. With this knowledge, we can further investigate the circuit and make any necessary adjustments for better performance.

With the development of the GPS global positioning system, many countries have also begun to develop their GPS systems. For example, China’s Beidou and Russia’s GLONASS. But the use of GPS also troubles many people. Like tracking systems, which impede people’s privacy.

GPS jammers were invented to block such tracking systems. People need to use GPS jammers to prevent criminals from illegally installing tracking systems on certain occasions. This type of anti-tracking system is very effective when vehicles are used and can reduce crimes and family conflicts.

How do GPS Jammers work?

The GPS jammer uses a circuit to send a white noise radio signal. This signal is transmitted around at the same frequency as the GPS satellite. Usually, there are several types of signals, such as L1 L2 L3 L4 L5. Some of the signals are civilian, and the other part of the signal is military. GPS jammers work by blocking the signals of GPS tracking devices and navigation systems.

Do GPS Jammers work?

Yes, GPS jammers or blockers do work, but they have a limited range. Signal detectors can easily find such devices. At the same time, the device typically plugs directly into the vehicle’s cigarette lighter.

Are Jammers for GPS system Illegal?

Yes, signal jammers are considered illegal in most countries, but they are also available in some countries. Such devices must be used legally as long as the signal range is limited.

How do I know if my vehicle has anti-tracking devices installed?

You can speculate whether the tracking device is working, or you can use the signal detector to try to find the anti-tracking device, and in the meantime, it must be your car.

What about GPS tracker detectors?

Neither trackers nor anti-trackers can escape the detection of signal detectors. But if the interval between the tracker’s transmissions is long, the detector will fail, that’s why the GPS jammer is needed.

What are the Best GPS Jammers?

Now let’s make a ranking of commonly used GPS jammers.

1. The most cost-effective GPS jammer

Private detectives exist in many fields.

These include criminal law, civil litigation, insurance, and banking. Clients hire private detectives when they cannot solve problems on their own. Tracking devices help these investigators find whoever they are looking for. Anyone who wants to remain anonymous must avoid being tracked by a private detective. GPS jammers prevent this by blocking tracking signals from passing through your device. Anyone can protect their privacy this way and remain unharassed by any investigator.

A PI is a specialist in investigative and fact-checking work.

They conduct research and look for evidence to support a case. Certain assignments require the use of a GPS tracker, which sends information back to the investigator’s computer. A good way to find a private detective is to talk to other people in your community who are looking for one. Many of these will be lawyers with whom you can work out a payment plan for or her services. Other people will be required to perform small tasks for the PI, such as acting as informants or surveillance operators. If you have a problem, you can hire a PI to help you find a solution. In many cases, they can get results much faster than the client can on their own.

If you are looking for hard evidence against someone, hiring a private detective is often the best option. They perform high-quality work without worrying about how much time they spend on each case. This is especially true if you have business interests that you want to protect from public view.

Investigators are also great at dealing with stubborn people who refuse to cooperate with them on principle. They are well aware that annoying people get them more information and keep clients happy.

Risks and Downsides.

However, hiring a private detective comes with its own set of risks and downsides. First and foremost, investigators are legally allowed to break into homes and offices without your permission if necessary. They also have complete freedom when it comes to committing crimes to gather evidence. It’s easy for anyone to set up an anonymous account with an online bank if they have enough money. This gives anyone working as a private detective full access to your finances without asking any questions! Anyone can hire these illegal accounts away – and everyone should protect themselves against this by purchasing a GPS jammer themselves.

Anyone looking to stay protected from private detectives should purchase a GPS jammer themselves! These devices let you avoid being tracked whenever necessary without spending much money or effort. Plus, hiring a PI puts you at risk no matter how rich or powerful you are- but buying one goes against the law! The cost of protection is low now that there are inexpensive jammers available online. Anyone can protect themselves against the investigations of other people!

The technology uses satellite and radio signals to determine the location of vehicles and people and is critical to the military, national security and the economy. But it’s not foolproof. As more people rely on GPS, the threat from jamming grows. In March 2012, a man was sentenced to 13 months in prison for operating a jamming device that prevented motorists from using mobile phones near his business. In February 2013, another man was jailed for using a cheap GPS jammer to make his commute easier. In June 2013, a man was jailed for three months for using a jammer in his car because he hated using his phone to talk to other drivers. Even though the devices are illegal, they can be easily purchased online (I won’t mention where). They can be very dangerous if you abuse them.

GPS signals are critical infrastructure

What makes GPS technology so important is that it provides a way for objects to navigate from one place to another. In other words, it’s used to help an object know where it is and how to get from point A to point B.

GPS technology is critical for the military because it allows soldiers and their equipment to be located accurately on the battlefield. It also helps determine where enemy forces are located so that military leaders can make better decisions about how best to engage them.

GPS technology is also critical for national security, which includes everything from fighting terrorism and protecting our borders, stopping drug trafficking and preventing cyberattacks against our nation’s infrastructure (such as electricity grids).

In addition, GPS technology plays an important role in everyday lives by providing information such as traffic congestion reports while you’re driving your car or walking through a large city such as New York City or Chicago; weather forecasts; airline flight schedules; delivery services like UPS or FedEx tracking information; directions back home after getting lost while hiking through trails in nature preserves such as Yellowstone National Park near Cody Wyoming USA!!!

U.S. bans arbitrary use of GPS signal jammers

The Federal Communications Commission is clamping down on illegal devices that jam cellphones and GPS receivers without permission.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has made it clear that the FCC will not tolerate interference with its communications frequencies. In response to this crackdown, many companies are now making sure that their products comply with FCC regulations before they go into production. While this may seem like a hassle for you as a consumer looking for a good deal on a GPS jammer, remember that even if you were able to purchase one online without having it confiscated by law enforcement first, it would be illegal for you to do so in most states in America anyway!

In March 2012, a man was sentenced to 13 months in prison for operating a jamming device that prevented motorists from using their cell phones near his business. He was fined $48,000, ordered to pay restitution of $48,000 and civil penalties of $10,000. In addition he was ordered to pay investigative costs of $2,000.

In February 2013, another man was sentenced to jail time for using a GPS jammer to make his commute easier.

This is an important reminder that if you misuse a high power signal jammer, it can be very dangerous. It’s not just illegal—it’s also dangerous because jammers interrupt signals from satellites that are used by emergency services like 911 or roadside assistance providers such as OnStar.
In June 2013, a man was sentenced to three months in jail for using a jammer in his car because he hated talking to other drivers on their cell phone.

As you might have guessed, jamming devices are illegal in the United States. However, they can be purchased online and used for a wide range of purposes.

Considerations when using

In fact, there are many reasons why someone would want to use a portable cell phone jammer. Some people use jammers to ensure that their cell phones will not receive calls or text messages while they’re at work or driving (a practice that most states have outlawed). Others buy them because they don’t want their own cell phones to be tracked by law enforcement or other parties. And some people even use jammers on their own property to prevent anyone—including police officers—from using signal-based GPS navigation devices in order to gain access without permission!

The bottom line is this: if you want your phone call interrupted by static every few seconds when someone else is talking into their phone nearby then go ahead and buy one from an online retailer today; otherwise stick with just having fun instead of hurting others who rely on signal-based services like emergency responders and navigators every day

The glonass signal is a Russian GPS signal. Most of the equipment is used in Russia. The coverage area is the third largest in the world. glonass has already networked with Beidou. Use a glonass blocker to block the device’s receive signal.

Signal range of Glonass:

Glonass L1: 1602～1616MHz
Glonass L2: 1246～1256MHz

Is GLONASS better than GPS?

GLONASS positioning accuracy is 5-10m, while GPS is 3.5-7.8m. Therefore, the accuracy of GPS is better than GLONASS because the lower the number of errors, the better. In terms of frequency, GLONASS operates at 1.602 GHz and GPS operates at 1.57542 GHz (L1 signal). When used alone, GLONASS has less coverage than GPS.

Do cell phones use GLONASS?

Modern cell phones are equipped with A-GPS and A-GLONASS support, bringing features such as turn-by-turn navigation, location tracking, and real-time location information.

What devices use GLONASS?

Contemporary uses for GLONASS are the same as GPS, with it being primarily used as a system for vehicle and aviation navigation. Historically, however, it was used in all branches of Russia’s military as a navigation system in high-speed scenarios, such as in jet planes and ballistic missiles.

How to choose a suitable GLONASS jammer?

First of all, you have to judge the range of use. If the range is relatively small, you can use a handheld GLONASS jammer.

If the range is relatively large, choose a desktop-class GLONASS jammer.

MINI-type jammer can use in cars, and generally this range is sufficient.

These days, having movements tracked — online and in the real world — is becoming more common. For business especially, there is a long list of GPS tracking benefits. While many people are willing to share their location for good purposes, there are others who are not.

What is a GPS jammer?

A GPS jammer is a typically small, self-contained, transmitter device used to conceal one’s location by sending radio signals with the same frequency as a GPS device. When this occurs, the GPS device is unable to determine its position due to interference.

The relatively low power and quick start up time allow the jammers to be used only when required. Although illegal, various types of cheap GPS jammers are available for purchase online, such as physical shields, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth jammers, remote control jammers, spy camera jammers and drone jammers, just to name a few.

How a GPS jammer works:

The user plugs the jammer into the automotive auxiliary power outlet. The unit is placed close to the installed GPS tracker. When active, the GPS jammer generates an interference signal over a 5 to 10 meter radius to disrupt reception of the GPS satellite signal. To understand how a jammer functions, it is also helpful to know how the global positioning system (GPS) works.

A GPS tracker receives microwave signals from an array of satellite transmitters orbiting the Earth. Once the tracker receives signals from four or more satellites, it determines its position through a series of time calculations and trilateration. The receiver relies on these precise and specific satellite signals to determine where it is in the world. The GPS tracking device then transmits this position and velocity information to a monitoring location, usually, sent over the cellular network.

In some cases, satellite malfunction or solar flares can temporarily disrupt the transmission of GPS signals. A GPS jammer is different though in that it sends out radio signals or signal noise with the same frequency as the GPS device, to override or distort the GPS satellite signals. When this occurs, the GPS device can then no longer calculate its position because the satellite signal is masked by the interference.GPS satellite broadcasting signals.

Who uses GPS jammers?

The reasons for using jammers are varied. Originally created by the government, GPS jammers were designed for military use. Concealing vehicle location can be crucial to the success of a mission. The devices act as a cloak giving the military privacy, increased safety and an overall advantage in high-risk situations.

Among civilians, some speeding drivers may use jamming devices to try to prevent detection by police and avoid fines. Criminals use GPS jammers as cover for vehicle theft or to avoid toll charges or mileage charges. In the fleet world, GPS jamming could be used by a driver to prevent the employer from knowing where they are going with the company vehicle.

Are GPS jammers legal?

GPS jamming is illegal in many countries, such as the U.S., Canada, and also in the UK. In the U.S., the federal Communications Act of 1934 outlawed the marketing, sale or use of GPS jammers. In Canada, the Radiocommunication Act also prohibits importing, manufacturing, distribution, selling, possessing and using GPS jamming devices.Harsh penalties exist for using jammers, for example:Fines of up to $100,000 or more in the U.S.ImprisonmentLoss of equipment.

How do GPS jammers impact the transportation industry?

To law enforcement and the transportation industry, GPS jammers are both a nuisance and cause for concern. Jamming interferes with GPS vehicle tracking, also known as fleet tracking or telematics, which is a critical source of business data to many companies. Fleets use telematics to track and manage fuel use, idling, driving behavior, engine health and other activities.

Not only are jammers illegal, but using them can be potentially dangerous. A New Jersey truck driver was fined almost $32,000 by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) when his GPS jamming device interrupted air traffic control information at Newark Liberty International Airport. The driver had used the jammer in his work truck to hide his location from his employer. An FCC investigator located the jammer using radio monitoring equipment and proved it was the cause of the interference.

How to use Geotab for GPS jamming detection

Fleets can use their Geotab solution to minimize the negative effects and keep drivers from flying under the radar. When a GPS signal is not received, the Trips History map will show a missing or interrupted trip – calling attention to an issue.

If GPS jamming occurs mid-trip, a straight line will be displayed from when jamming starts to the point where the jamming device is turned off. Anyone monitoring the vehicle will quickly see this and can investigate the cause of the missing trip information. There may be other reasons for loss of GPS data, other than GPS jamming, for example a radio that is not working properly.

A straight line in MyGeotab indicates GPS disruption.

The GPS module in newer Geotab GO units has a jamming detection function that will trigger the device to report a debug log. Fleet managers can see this in the MyGeotab log details as: “GpsJammingDetected.”
Set up alerts for GPS jammingGeotab users can automate detection by creating a Log Data & Collisions report in MyGeotab and setting it to be sent only when at least one event is detected. When GPS jamming occurs, the report will be sent via email as an alert, prompting further investigation.

It is important to note that even when a GPS jammer disrupts GPS receiver functionality, all other functions are unaffected. Despite the lost GPS connection, the Geotab GO device will continue to gather and send critical vehicle-related data such as engine data, error codes and auxiliaries.

A GPS jammer is a small, self-contained signal blocking device used to block GPS tracking by sending a radio signal at the same or farther range as the GPS device.

The relatively low power and quick start-up time allow the jammers to be used only when required. Although illegal, various types of cheap GPS jammers are available for purchase online, such as physical shields, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth jammers, remote control jammers, spy camera jammers, and drone jammers, just to name a few.

How a GPS jammer works?

The user plugs the jammer into the automotive auxiliary power outlet.

The unit is placed close to the installed GPS tracker.

When active, the GPS jammer generates an interference signal over a 5 to 10 meter radius to disrupt reception of the GPS satellite signal.

When this occurs, the GPS device can then no longer calculate its position because the satellite signal is masked by the interference.

Owners who buy old cars, or users of some private activities also have needs.

Are GPS jammers legal?

GPS jamming is illegal in many countries, such as the U.S., Canada, and also in the UK. In the U.S., the federal Communications Act of 1934 outlawed the marketing, sale or use of GPS jammers. In Canada, the Radiocommunication Act also prohibits importing, manufacturing, distribution, selling, possessing and using GPS jamming devices.

But if you have special needs, some buyers can still get the opportunity to authorize it. This is only for authorized users.

Summarize

Regardless, GPS jammers are an effective means of preventing tracking. Especially when many illegally installed GPS trackers are not easy to find, this kind of device is very effective.

For some special GPS trackers, we may also need to use a cell phone signal blocker that blocks 2G 3G signals. Only such a blocker can completely block GPS tracking.
